The Last Book I Borrowed

  • Title: Haikyu!!, Vol.4
  • Author: Haruichi Furudate
  • Series: Haikyu!! #4
  • Format: eBook
  • Age Rating: YA
  • Genre: Sport
  • Pages: 216

Plot: Ever since he saw the legendary player known as “the Little Giant” compete at the national volleyball finals, Shoyo Hinata has been aiming to be the best volleyball player ever! He decides to join the team at the high school the Little Giant went to—and then surpass him. Who says you need to be tall to play volleyball when you can jump higher than anyone else?

This one was a bit boring for me. While I know I will be getting a lot of volleyball scenes I was hoping for some more character focused moments during the match but it was just gameplay. WHICH IS UNDERSTANDABLE – I just prefer the volumes set off the court. Ironic I know.

Plot: Princess Imogen of Goslind has lived a sheltered life for three years at the boarded-up castle—she and the rest of its inhabitants safe from the bloody mori roja plague that’s ravaged the kingdom. But Princess Imogen has a secret, and as King Stuart descends further into madness, it’s at great risk of being revealed. Rations dwindle each day, and unhappy murmurings threaten to crack the facade of the years-long charade being played within the castle walls. Nico Mott once enjoyed a comfortable life of status, but the plague took everyone and everything from him. If not for the generosity of a nearby lord, Nico may not have survived the mori roja’s aftermath. But does owing Lord Crane his life mean he owes him his silence? They will each have to navigate the web of lies they’ve woven if they’re going to survive the nightmares that lie ahead.

The Last Book You Finished/The Last Book I Rated 5 Stars

  • Title: The Hexologists
  • Author: Josiah Bancroft
  • Series: The Hexologists #1
  • Format: Paperback
  • Age Rating: Adult
  • Genre: Fantasy
  • Pages: 318

Plot: The Hexologists, Iz and Warren Wilby, are quite accustomed to helping desperate clients with the bugbears of city life. Aided by hexes and a bag of charmed relics, the Wilbies have recovered children abducted by chimney-wraiths, removed infestations of barb-nosed incubi, and ventured into the Gray Plains of the Unmade to soothe a troubled ghost. Well-acquainted with the weird, they never shy away from a challenging case. But when they are approached by the royal secretary and told the king pleads to be baked into a cake—going so far as to wedge himself inside a lit oven—the Wilbies soon find themselves embroiled in a mystery that could very well see the nation turned on its head. Their effort to expose a royal secret buried under forty years of lies brings them nose to nose with a violent anti-royalist gang, avaricious ghouls, alchemists who draw their power from a hell-like dimension, and a bookish dragon who only occasionally eats people. Armed with a love toughened by adversity and a stick of chalk that can conjure light from the darkness, hope from the hopeless, Iz and Warren Wilby are ready for a case that will test every spell, skill, and odd magical artifact in their considerable bag of tricks.

This was a 5 out of 5 star read!

The Last Book I DNF’d

  • Title: Assistant to the Villain
  • Author: Hannah Nicole Maehrer
  • Series: Assistant to the Villain #1
  • Format: Paperback
  • Age Rating: Adult
  • Genre: Romantasy
  • Pages: 352

Plot: With ailing family to support, Evie Sage’s employment status isn’t just important, it’s vital. So when a mishap with Rennedawn’s most infamous Villain results in a job offer—naturally, she says yes. No job is perfect, of course, but even less so when you develop a teeny crush on your terrifying, temperamental, and undeniably hot boss. Don’t find evil so attractive, Evie. But just when she’s getting used to severed heads suspended from the ceiling and the odd squish of an errant eyeball beneath her heel, Evie suspects this dungeon has a huge rat…and not just the literal kind. Because something rotten is growing in the kingdom of Rennedawn, and someone wants to take the Villain—and his entire nefarious empire—out. Now Evie must not only resist drooling over her boss but also figure out exactly who is sabotaging his work…and ensure he makes them pay.

Now I DNFd this due to just not getting what I wanted out of it. I kind of wished this book was more of a ‘rockumentary’ kind of book with office romance shenanigans and fantasy office moments. The romance was more slow-burn than I expected and the plot just went down an avenue I wasn’t obsessed with.
