WebToon Recommendations

So, for those of you who don’t know, one of the challenges that I set myself for 2021 was to read more manga, comics and graphic novels. I want to branch out more and try new mediums. I have seen a lot of hype online regarding web comics specifically comics on a site called WebToon. Some of the comics featured on that site have subsequently become tv shows or their own physical graphic novels and I wanted to see what all of the hype was about.

I created an account in January and starting binge-reading a couple of comics. I became super invested. I want to talk to you all today about some of the comics I am currently reading. FYI: You can only find these comics on WebToon and this is in no way sponsored by WebToon… they can sponsor me if they want 😉 But this post is just me wanting to talk about the some great comics I am reading.

  • Title: Miss Abbott and the Doctor
  • Author: Maripaz Villar
  • Country of Origin: Spain
  • Genre: Romance/Historical Fiction
  • Status: Completed

Plot: Doctor Andreas Marino loves his quiet life, filled with work and simple amusements, and when the strange Miss Abbott arrives in his town he decides he doesn’t like her at all. Unfortunately she’s funny and quirky, has an uncommon past and seems to enjoy getting him in trouble.

This is a super fun and super cute romance set in Victorian times. It follows the budding romance between the above characters, Cati Abbot and Doctor Andreas Marino and you can access all the episodes through the site’s Daily Pass feature. This means that instead of reading each episode one after the other and straight up binging it in one day. Each day you can unlock an episode and it means you read the story at a slower pace. I am super invested in this couple’s story that I don’t mind only waiting a day to read the next episode since for other comics I have to wait one whole WEEK!

  • Title: A Ghost on the Roof
  • Author: Klaus Scrimshaw
  • Country of Origin: France
  • Genre: Romance/Re-telling/Mystery
  • Status: On-going
  • Day It Updates: Sundays

Plot: When a young soprano hears a voice on the Paris opera house’s roof, strange events upset the ballerinas’ everyday life.

So, this is a modern day re-telling of the famous Phantom of the Opera story. I found this on the special Canvas feature on WebToon. WebToon is split into two categories, Canvas and Originals. Originals are featured comics chosen by WebToon to promote across the whole site and they translate them into many languages. Canvas is an page where anybody with a story can upload their own comics for people to read and if you’re lucky, WebToon will pick it up and make it an Original. I love re-tellings as I love seeing a fresh take on the characters and the world and it’s a great new way to consume a story you know and love.

  • Title: Lore Olympus
  • Author: Rachel Smythe
  • Country of Origin: New Zealand
  • Genre: Romance/Re-telling
  • Status: On-going (Season Two)
  • Day It Updates: Sundays

Plot: Witness what the gods do…after dark. The friendships and the lies, the gossip and the wild parties, and of course, forbidden love. Because it turns out, the gods aren’t so different from us after all, especially when it comes to their problems. Stylish and immersive, this is one of mythology’s greatest stories — The Taking of Persephone — as it’s never been told before.

If you love Greek mythology and if you love re-tellings, you will love this comic. Focusing on the romance between Persephone and the King of the Underworld, Hades, you are introduced to a super modern version of the Greek Gods. The art style is super unique and it covers some pretty important topics and you cannot help but root for this couple!! This was the first comic I read and I read the whole first season in 2 days! I am now currently reading season two and having to wait a week for each episode which is a pain but so worth it!

  • Title: The Remarried Empress
  • Author: Alphatart/Sumpul
  • Country of Origin: South Korea
  • Genre: Fantasy
  • Status: On-going
  • Day It Updates: Wednesdays & Sundays

Plot: Navier Ellie Trovi was an empress perfect in every way — intelligent, courageous, and socially adept. She was kind to her subjects and devoted to her husband. Navier was perfectly content to live the rest of her days as the wise empress of the Eastern Empire. That is, until her husband brought home a mistress and demanded a divorce. “I accept this divorce… And I request an approval of my remarriage.” In a shocking twist, Navier remarries another emperor and retains her title and childhood dream as empress. But just how did everything unfold?

What I love about this comic is it starts off with the ending. You know how this comic ends but you don’t know what led to those actions and decisions so the rest of the comic is finding it out. This has such a beautiful art style and I really enjoy the main character and the way she handles herself through all the disrespect sent her way. I just want her to be happy! You keep reading because you want to see that first scene happen all over again but this time with all the context.

  • Title: The Secrets of Soulford
  • Author: The Quincil
  • Country of Origin: N/A
  • Genre: Fantasy/Mystery
  • Status: On-going
  • Day It Updates: Saturdays

Plot: Gan Ainm just wants to live an invisible life in her new home, Soulford; but a local guard is far too determined to uncover the secrets she’s desperate to hide, especially since Gan is certain he’s also concealing secrets of his own. The resulting feud may unravel deeper mysteries than either of them were prepared to face.

It took me a little bit of time to initially get into this comic but slowly the threads start connecting and the mystery starts getting more and more involved and next minute I knew I was hooked! This is also a comic on the Canvas feature which is super amazing! I think there’s so much featured Original content that people may miss out on some amazing comics on the Canvas page!

  • Title: Garden Club Detective Squad
  • Author: 52chu
  • Country of Origin: South Korea
  • Genre: Mystery
  • Status: On-going
  • Day It Updates: Wednesdays

Plot: Gardening and solving crime aren’t what straight-A student Yeon Han thought she would be focusing on at her new school. But when she discovers a notebook that contains clues to a 15-year-old murder mystery, she and the other members of her new gardening club realize the murderer not only has access to the school — they probably work for the school. Can the gardening club squad figure out who committed the murder even though the principal and their teachers seem desperate to cover it up?

I love a good mystery and I also love friendship and this comic has both. I really like how different each of the members are and I also love the actual mystery. Every episode leaves me asking more and more questions!

  • Title: PIGPEN
  • Author: Carnby Kim/Beom Sick Cheon
  • Country of Origin: South Korea
  • Genre: Mystery/Thriller
  • Status: Completed

Plot: A relaxing getaway in paradise, or a death trap? A young man wakes up on a breathtaking beach, but he has no idea who he is or how he got there. Try as he might to piece it all together, untangling this mind-bending mystery won’t be easy when every clue leads to more maddening questions… and the family that welcomes him into their home is not what they seem.

Now this comic messes with you head. I am like 40 episodes in and despite receiving loads of information I am nowhere near figuring out what’s going on! Every morning I wake up and read this comic as I need to know more about this story and how it will end.

This comic is currently under the Daily Pass feature, so one episode a day.
