The DNFs of 2024

Not long to go before the BIG DAY! This year has been the year that I have DNFd the most books since I started logging my readers. This year after reading 140+ books this year I have DNFed 16 books but I am only going to talk about 12 as I genuinely can’t remember why I dnfed the others. Clearly not worth talking about… Let’s get into them and my reasonings.

  • Title: Hard By A Great Forest
  • Author: Leo Vardiashvili
  • Series: Standalone
  • Format: Paperback
  • Age Rating: Adult
  • Genre: Literary Fiction
  • Month Read: February

Reasons for the DNF: Dnfd at 25%

Every year I am a reader for a fiction prize that occurs each spring. So going into these award readings I know there will be books that maybe don’t work for me. This was the case for this such one. I just couldn’t get into the story. I wish there was more of a reason but I just couldn’t keep myself engaged.

  • Title: Freakslaw
  • Author: Jane Flett
  • Series: Standalone
  • Format: Paperback
  • Age Rating: Adult
  • Genre: Literary Fiction
  • Month Read: March

Reasons for the DNF: Dnfd at 39%

Another one from the prize. I really struggled with this book. Some of the content was a tad bit too vulgar with for me and I think the ages of the characters were making be a tad bit uncomfortable for some of the scenes they were put in.

  • Title: Can’t Spell Treason Without Tea
  • Author: Rebecca Thorne
  • Series: Tomes & Tea #1
  • Format: Audiobook
  • Age Rating: Adult
  • Genre: Fantasy
  • Month Read: April

Reasons for the DNF: Dnfd at 40%

I want to preface and say this was mainly because I was prioritising so many other books that I just kept neglecting this one. That being said, because I work in a bookstore I kind of felt like I was being in work again. I also found it really hard to establish between our two main characters in the audiobook so the characters just felt the exact same and like they had the exact same personality.

  • Title: Eve
  • Author: Cat Bohannan
  • Series: Standalone
  • Format: Paperback
  • Age Rating: Adult
  • Genre: Non-Fiction (Science Writing)
  • Month Read: April

Reasons for the DNF: DNF at 50%

This was purely because I lost track of the book. But what I did read I really enjoyed it!

  • Title: The Stars Too Fondly
  • Author: Emily Hamilton
  • Series: Standalone
  • Format: Paperback
  • Age Rating: Adult
  • Genre: Sci-Fi
  • Month Read: May

Reasons for the DNF: Dnf at 22%

This book started off strong but ended up going down a road that I thought was cliched and over done. I am bored of elemental themed powers where everyone can control one of the elements. It’s just over used so much! After that reveal, I just lost all desire to continue the book after that.

  • Title: Rouge
  • Author: Mona Awad
  • Series: Standalone
  • Format: Hardback
  • Age Rating: Adult
  • Genre: Horror
  • Month Read: May

Reasons for the DNF: Dnf at 15%

I didn’t love the writing style, I found the pace very slow and just lost interest.

  • Title: The Mermaid of Black Conch
  • Author: Monique Roffey
  • Series: Standalone
  • Format: eBook
  • Age Rating: Adult
  • Genre: Fantasy
  • Month Read: May

Reasons for DNF: Dnf at 15%

I am very particular about any sexual content that I read. And some of the language and treatment towards the mermaid just got too much for me to continue reading the book.

  • Title: The Duke and I
  • Author: Julia Quinn
  • Series: Bridgerton #1
  • Format: eBook
  • Age Rating: Adult
  • Genre: Historical Romance
  • Month Read: May

Reasons for DNF: Dnf at 23%

This is a case of the adaptation being better than the source material. How you go from that book to the tv show is some incredible screen writing. The book just felt icky to me, I preferred Daphne’s characterisation in the show and found there to be a lack of chemistry between the two main leads.

  • Title: Silver Spoon, Vol. 1
  • Author: Hiromu Arakawa
  • Series: Silver Spoon #1
  • Format: Paperback
  • Age Rating: YA
  • Genre: Slice of Life
  • Month Read: August

Reasons for DNF: Dnf at 50%

I am devastated by this as I normally love Arakawa’s work but this could not engage me at all. The info dumping on agricultural stuff was boring, the plot was boring and I just wasn’t fussed about the characters.

  • Title: Fang Si-Chi’s First Love Paradise
  • Author: Lin Yi-Han
  • Series: Standalone
  • Format: Paperback
  • Age Rating: Adult
  • Genre: Literary Fiction
  • Month Read: August

Reasons for DNF: Dnf at 20%

The topic of this book is all about child abuse and how school/learning systems fail children. This was an incredibly dark topic that I felt brave enough to tackle as it was quite a short book. Unfortunately, it was not a fun read so I decided to put my mental well-being first and not finish it.

  • Title: Endless Night
  • Author: Agatha Christie
  • Series: Standalone
  • Format: Paperback
  • Age Rating: Adult
  • Genre: Thriller
  • Month Read: October

Reasons for DNF: Dnf at 27%

I read just under 100 pages and apart from two characters rushing into a marriage nothing was happening. No murder, no theft, nothing. I found it to be incredibly boring and I find Christie’s romances to be so one dimensional and kind of toxic so I didn’t enjoy the couples dynamic at all in this book.

  • Title: A Very Lively Murder
  • Author: Katy Watson
  • Series: Three Dahlias Mysteries #2
  • Format: Paperback
  • Age Rating: Adult
  • Genre: Murder Mystery

Reasons for DNF: Dnf at 40%

While I loved the main trio of Dahlias and the setting unfortunately I couldn’t get past the really slow pacing and the not that very interesting side characters!

  • Title: Split Tooth
  • Author: Tanya Tagaq
  • Series: Standalone
  • Format: Paperback
  • Age Rating: Adult
  • Genre: Magic Realism

Reasons for DNF: Dnf at 40%

I loved the way this was written style-wise but I found the topics too triggering and I struggled with the lack of plot. It was honestly the incredibly inventive style that kept me going.
