The Last Ten Books Book Tag

And we are back again. I rarely do tags but sometimes I struggle to come up with ideas and these tags save me!

The Last Book You Didn’t Finish?

The Two Deaths of Ruth Lyle – Nick Louth

There were some character choices and language choices that just didn’t work for me. Which is such a shame as the plot was really interesting.

Plot: She must solve the ultimate riddle… DI Jan Talantire is called to a cottage in Ilfracombe, where the female occupant is found dead, impaled with a crucifix. The woman, who had been renting the house for a few months, is well known locally. Documents found at her house indicate her name is Ruth Lyle. The name means nothing to the young PC who found her, but DI Talantire knows that this cannot be true. Fifty years earlier, sixteen-year-old Ruth Lyle was murdered – stabbed by a crucifix, in exactly the same location. It is impossible for this to be the same woman, and yet all the records are a match. With a brutal killer at large, DI Talantire must work quickly to solve the most complicated case of her how can a woman die twice?

The Last Book You Re-Read?

Whose Body? – Dorothy L. Sayers

I am not a massive re-reader so this is the exact same book as last year! ahahaha!

I originally audio-booked this story but I wanted to read it physically since I loved the audiobook so much!

Plot: The stark naked body was lying in the tub. Not unusual for a proper bath, but highly irregular for murder — especially with a pair of gold pince-nez deliberately perched before the sightless eyes. What’s more, the face appeared to have been shaved after death. The police assumed that the victim was a prominent financier, but Lord Peter Wimsey, who dabbled in mystery detection as a hobby, knew better. In this, his first murder case, Lord Peter untangles the ghastly mystery of the corpse in the bath.

The last book you bought?

The Silverblood Promise – James Logan

I basically saw the cover and knew it had to be mine. It’s giving first Mistborn book/The Lies of Locke Lamora vibes.

Plot: Lukan Gardova is a cardsharp, academy dropout, and―thanks to a duel that ended badly―the disgraced heir to an ancient noble house. His days consist of cheap wine, rigged card games, and wondering how he might win back the life he threw away. When Lukan discovers that his estranged father has been murdered in strange circumstances, he finds fresh purpose. Deprived of his chance to make amends for his mistakes, he vows to unravel the mystery behind his father’s death. His search for answers leads him to Saphrona, fabled city of merchant princes, where anything can be bought if one has the coin. Lukan only seeks the truth, but instead he finds danger and secrets in every shadow. For in Saphrona, everything has a price―and the price of truth is the deadliest of all.

The last book you said you read but didn’t?

I am a bookseller – sometimes you have to say you have read the book… I try to be honest most of the time but sometimes I say a cheeky white lie.

The last book you wrote in the margins of?

The Spook’s Apprentice – Joseph Delaney

I am currently reading this for book group and I am annotating it on my Kindle Scribe.

Plot: For years, the local Spook has been keeping the County safe from evil. Now his time is coming to an end, but who will take over? Many apprentices have tried. Some floundered, some fled, some failed to stay alive. Just one boy is left. Thomas Ward. He is the last hope. But does he stand a chance against Mother Malkin, the most dangerous witch in the County?

The last book you had signed?

The List of Suspicious Things – Jennie Godfrey

I organised a Meet the Author event at the store I work in and was able to get my copy signed.

Plot: ‘What if we decided to try and find him?’
‘What on earth are you on about?’ she said. ‘How are we going to catch the Yorkshire Ripper, when the police haven’t even managed to?’
I sighed. Her questioning my ideas was a recent and unwelcome element to our friendship. But it was a valid point. How would we catch him? We needed some sort of plan, a way of gathering clues and putting them into order. I thought about what the policeman had said about structure, and then about Aunty Jean and her notebook, and the idea I had hardened like toffee. I knew exactly what we needed to do. ‘We’ll make a list,’ I said. ‘A list of the people and things we see that are suspicious. And then . . . And then we’ll investigate them.’

The last book you lost?

I cannot think of a single book. There probably are some but I most likely forgot I donated them…

The last book you had to replace?

Evil Under the Sun – Agatha Christie

Not replacing but I saw this copy and knew I had to get it. Not sure yet what I will do with my paperback copy yet.

Plot: The beautiful bronzed body of Arlena Stuart lay facedown on the beach. But strangely, there was no sun and she was not sunbathing… she had been strangled. Ever since Arlena’s arrival the air had been thick with sexual tension. Each of the guests had a motive to kill her. But Hercule Poirot suspects that this apparent ‘crime of passion’ conceals something much more evil.

The last book you had an argument over?

The Cruel Prince – Holly Black

Not an argument but there was a great book group discussion about this book and our disagreements surrounding it.

Plot: Jude was seven when her parents were murdered and she and her two sisters were stolen away to live in the treacherous High Court of Faerie. Ten years later, Jude wants nothing more than to belong there, despite her mortality. But many of the fey despise humans. Especially Prince Cardan, the youngest and wickedest son of the High King. To win a place at the Court, she must defy him–and face the consequences. As Jude becomes more deeply embroiled in palace intrigues and deceptions, she discovers her own capacity for trickery and bloodshed. But as betrayal threatens to drown the Courts of Faerie in violence, Jude will need to risk her life in a dangerous alliance to save her sisters, and Faerie itself.

The last book you couldn’t get hold of?

Steam Reverie in Amber – Kuroimori

I had pre-ordered it years ago without realising it is only available in America. I only realised that this week. I had been wondering for ages why I hadn’t received it!

Plot: In a world wedged somewhere between past and future, an airship drifts gently among pillow-soft clouds. This is the Tomeship–purveyor of used books and fresh coffee across the skies. It can only be seen by those who bear the Gearform Scar on their hearts. Are you one such soul?
