Plot: A relaxing getaway in paradise, or a death trap? A young man wakes up on a breathtaking beach, but he has no idea who he is or how he got there. Try as he might to piece it all together, untangling this mind-bending mystery won’t be easy when every clue leads to more maddening questions… and the family that welcomes him into their home is not what they seem.
So, this was a webcomic I started back in January which was part of WebToon’s daily pass program/feature. This meant that I could only access one episode a day and let me tell you, it was worth it!
I didn’t have many expectations going into it but I did hear that a lot of people enjoyed reading it and that Carnby Kim himself had some other well-renowned webcomics. One I believe was turned into a show in South Korea.
So, starting with the art. I really enjoyed the colour palette of this comic. The focus was on darker colours like black and dark blue with additional white. Since the colours were muted quite a bit when you got a flash of red to signify blood or other objects it really helped it stand out and make a statement. I felt colour was used super well to convey extra emotion or emphasis on a certain object within the comic.
Since this is a thriller I did expect some creepier panels and let me tell you, the artist DELIVERED! I was majorly freaked out on some of the pieces but it was so good.
In terms of the plot I felt that the pacing of the mystery was done really well. No episode felt like filler content or just added to puff out the story. Every episode left me questioning what would happen next and any time I managed to get enough online coins to fast pass an extra episode I would! I am never usually a massive fan of the amnesia trope but I felt this was done super well and successfully. To be honest, there were a lot of tropes used in this comic that I don’t normally go towards as I have seen it be done badly by other authors or TV shows but I felt they were done really well here!
I really enjoyed the main protagonist of this story. Going along the journey with him and trying to figure out what was going on was really enjoyable. Just learning more about him bit by bit as well. I can’t really say too much about the characters as I do begin to enter spoiler territory.
Overall, this was a really great thriller that you can get super invested in. I feel like more people need to get WebToon!!
Ok, I know I keep promising a Red Seas Under Red Skies review but it’s soooo long and soooo slow-paced. I am hoping to finish it this week!
